Northwest Arkansas homelessness increased 36 percent in two years, according to the UA most recent homeless census. Shelters have prepared to help the nearly 2,000 homeless people prepare for cold weather.
Homeless man, Kelvin (pictured in the first photo below), is a retired graveyard worker and has lived alone in the Fayetteville, Ark. woods for 12 years, he said. His only shields against the night are the trees and a tarp he uses as a blanket. “I used to have a tent, but people would always find it and slash holes in it with knives,” he said. “I don’t like people very much.”
Below are photos of Kelvin and others like him that have made their home deep in the Fayetteville woods.
